    The Associate Degree in Indigenous Education course is specifically designed for, and is only available to, Australian Indigenous people. The Associate Degree in Indigenous Education is designed for progression into the Bachelor of Education (Primary) (Indigenous Studies) course.

  • Course description
    This course is designed to offer studies in:

       1. Indigenous culture;
       2. Literacy;
       3. Mathematics education; and
       4. Understanding Indigenous Education.

    This course is offered in mixed mode. Students are required to attend compulsory residential schools on campus each semester and to complete course work and assignments within their home communities. Academic support is available to students who require it through the Indigenous Tutorial Assistance Scheme (ITAS). Professional Experience is also a compulsory component of each course and is taken in block-periods that extend from 1 to 10 weeks.

    Students must complete professional experience units during which time they are required to be available full-time.

    Employment Screening

    Students accepting a place in this course are required to participate in a number of professional placements throughout their program. In order to participate in professional experience if is the responsibility of each student to ensure that they are able to successfully complete the child protection screening required in their state Students, who are not cleared for working with children and therefore not able to be placed in a compulsory professional placement, will not be able to complete their course.

    1. Requirements for Completion of the Associate Degree48

    To qualify for the Associate Degree, a student must complete:

    1. 160 cp from the Schedule of Unit Offerings, consisting of:

       1. 80 cp from Curriculum Foundation units consisting of:
             1. 20 cp from English;
             2. 20 cp from Indigenous Studies;
             3. 10 cp from Mathematics;
             4. 20 cp from Science;
             5. 10 cp from Theology;
       2. 30 cp from Education Studies;
       3. 50 cp from Curriculum and Pedagogy;

    and

    2. 2 Professional Experience units.
