  • Objectives
    The degree enhances the professional skills that students acquired in their primary degree by allowing students to assess more rigorously the links between the theoretical bases and practice. The degree also develops skills in problem analysis and research which can be applied at the professional level. The Honours degree is the first step in undertaking an academic or research orientated career as it provides access to higher degrees by research.
  • Entry requirements
    The following factors are taken into account in selection and admission of Honours candidates: * the applicant's academic record * the availability of an appropriate supervisor or supervisors for the applicant, and agreement between the applicant and nominated supervisor(s) on a suitable dissertation topic * the lapse in time since an applicant qualified for the award of a bachelor degree It is expected that candidates who achieve a GPA of 5 in their final 2 years of degree study will be admitted. However, candidates whose levels of achievement fall below these admission requirements for any particular year, may apply to the faculty concerned for special consideration of their applications.

    Career Opportunities

    An honours degree provides the opportunity to continue undergraduate studies at a higher level, specialising in a particular area of interest.  An honours degree is a rigorous and scholarly program of further study, which develops a student's ability to generate new knowledge and distil new ideas out of existing knowledge.  Candidates with honours are particularly sought after by employers and can choose from more interesting research and development positions because of their extra skills and proven abilities.  It can also provide a pathway to research higher degree study.  Completing an honours degree involves an additional full-time year of study (or the equivalent) following completion of a bachelor program.
