Course description
This double degree program equips students to work in a wide range of areas related to the provision of health and social welfare services in a modern society.
It combines traditional social work skills with the broader issue of social planning, providing expertise not just in the delivery of social services but also in the planning, development and monitoring of programs which are appropriate to current social conditions.
You will be exposed to ideas from sociology, politics, public administration, social work theory, human social development, social policy, organisational analysis, research methods, social planning and social administration.
The program comprises of professional studies with an applied orientation. You will take 2 field placements totalling 140 days and there are opportunities for overseas placements.
On completion, graduates will receive 2 degrees: Bachelor of Social Work and Bachelor of Social Planning.

The Centre offers such services as the Star Bear program for children who are grieving the loss of a parent, sibling or carer and the Living through Suicide Program.
Professional recognition
This social work degree is recognised as academic preparation for admission to the Australian Association of Social Workers.

Study a language
Flinders also offers all students the opportunity to major in a language in conjunction with any undergraduate course. The Diploma in Language is designed to provide students with competence in a chosen language that adds greater portability to their qualifications. You will complete a total of one extra year of study and graduate with both your chosen degree and the Diploma in Language. You can apply for this at time of enrolment.
The Bachelor of Social Work and Bachelor of Social Planning program of study requires four years of full-time study (or equivalent part-time). After successful completion of the fourth year of the program both the degrees of Bachelor of Social Work and Bachelor of Social Planning are awarded.
An honours degree of the Bachelor of Social Work can be completed by taking an alternative Fourth Year Program. Enrolment in the honours program of the Bachelor of Social Work may be offered to a student who meets certain academic criteria and subject to the school/department being able to provide appropriate resources and staff to supervise the program of study.
The course is offered by the Faculty of Social Sciences.
PROGRAM OF STUDY [November, 2008]
To qualify for the degrees of Bachelor of Social Work and Bachelor of Social Planning, a student must complete 144 units with a grade of P or NGP or better in each topic, according to the program of study below.
Not all topics are necessarily available in a given year.
Except with permission of the Faculty Board the course must be completed within 10 consecutive years.
The award of a grade of Fail (F) in the same topic on more than one occasion may constitute prima facie evidence of unsatisfactory progress for the purposes of the University's policy on Student Progress.
