Objectives:
Disability workers make a real difference in people's lives, whether they are working in a residential care facility, group home or a private residence. Workers support people with disabilities, helping them to achieve greater levels of independence, self-reliance and community participation. This course is for those who are new to the field or are already working in the industry and who want to gain or enhance their qualifications and future employment prospects. As well as core subjects, you can select four subjects of your choice (electives) so you can tailor the course to your own interests and career aspirations. By maintaining a focus on developing practical skills, the Health and Community Studies department has a long history of assisting graduates to achieve a successful employment outcome in this rewarding career choice.
Entry Requirements:
* Successful completion of Year 12 (or equivalent) or mature age * A written application, interview and literacy assessment * All successful applicants will undergo a police check and working with children check.

Course Description:
What you will learn
In this course you will learn how to:
* Orientation to disability work
* Utilise specialist communication skills to build strong relationships
* Work within a legal and ethical framework
* Maintain an environment designed to empower people with a disability
* Provide services to people with disabilities
* Design procedures for support
* Plan and implement community integration
* Maintain an effective work environment
* Participate in safety procedures for direct care work
* Work effectively with culturally diverse clients and co-workers.
As well as the core units, four other units (electives) will be delivered as below:
* Provide physical assistance with medication
* Assess and deliver services to clients with complex needs
* Develop leisure and health programs for clients with special needs
* Apply advanced first aid.
