You will develop introductory skills in community services work and knowledge of a range of community services. You will learn about communication skills, counselling, group work, advocacy, community development, and other strategies relevant to the community services industry.

Community Services Work Certificate III (NRT) - Armidale Campus
Course Description:
This qualification is competency based and meets the requirements of the
CHC02 training package qualification Certificate III in Community Services
(CHC30802).
 
The training package requires completion of thirteen (13) units of
competency:  

·   Eleven (11) are compulsory units of competency.
·   Two (2) are elective units of competency.
 
TAFE NSW, on industry recommendation has added the unit of competency
CHCCHILD1C, Identify and respond to children and young people at risk of
harm, to the compulsory group. The unit has been taken from the
qualification "Group 1" additional compulsory list. The unit could be one
of two chosen from among a group of six (6) units as set out in the
training package rules.  

Industry also strongly endorsed that learners still have the opportunity to
complete two elective units of competency. Therefore the TAFE qualification
requires completion of fourteen (14) units of competency:
 
·   Twelve (12) are compulsory units of competency.
·   Two (2) are elective units of competency.
 
Learners must complete the units specified in the course structure.
 
Group 1

Group 1 contains ten (10) of the twelve (12) compulsory units of the TAFE
NSW Certificate III in Community Services Work, including the additional
compulsory unit CHCCHILD1C, added to the compulsory group from
recommendations of the Industry Reference Group and TAFE Training Package
Implementation group.  

Group 1, Subgroup 1

-------------------
Group, Subgroup 1 contains nine (9) of the compulsory units, including the
additional unit, CHCCHILD1C Identify and respond to children and young
people at risk of harm.
 
The Workplace Learning Module, 4454Y, which contributes to workplace
learning and assessment, is also included in this group. This module is
not mapped to units of competency and has been included in the compulsory
group to:  

·   ensure that the on-the-job requirements of this course - a minimum of
60 hours of workplace learning and assessment - are met.
·   enable the assessor to validate that all workplace learning activities
the compulsory training package requirements have been undertaken.
·   enable the teacher to manage learner participation in workplace
activities in line with TAFE NSW's policy.
 
Group 1, Subgroup 2

This group contains two (2) units, one of which must be chosen to count
towards completion of the compulsory group.
 
Learners select either CHCOHS301A, Participate in workplace safety
procedures or CHCOHS302A, Participate in safety procedures for direct care
 
Group 2 - Generic units of competency
-------------------------------------
This group contains seven (7) units of competency. Two units from this
group must be chosen to contribute towards completion of the compulsory
group.  

Group 2, Subgroup 1
-------------------
This group contains five (5) units of competency, two of which may be
chosen to contribute towards completion of the compulsory group. At least
one unit of competency must be chosen from this subgroup.
 
Group 2, Subgroup 2
-------------------
This subgroup contains two (2) units of competency, only one of which may
be chosen to count towards completion of the compulsory group. This group
is optional.
 
Group 3 - Elective Units
------------------------
This group, together with Group 4, contains the elective units. Learners
must complete either Group 3 or Group 4. If Group 3 is selected, learners
must choose one of the subgroups, from subgroup 1 through to subgroup 7
and complete two (2) electives from the chosen subgroup.
 
Group 3, Subgroup 1: Alcohol & other drugs elective units

This group contains four (4) alcohol & other drugs elective units of
competency, two (2) of which may be chosen to contribute towards course
completion.  

Group 3, Subgroup 2: Youth Work elective units
----------------------------------------------
This group contains five (5) Youth Work elective units of competency, two
(2) of which may be chosen to contribute towards course completion.
 
Group 3, Subgroup 3: Residential Care elective units
----------------------------------------------------
This group contains two (2) Residential Care elective units of competency,
of which may be chosen to contribute towards course completion.
 
Group 3, Subgroup 4: Disability Work elective units

This group contains three (3) Disability Work elective units of
competency, two (2) of which may be chosen to contribute towards course
completion.  

Group 3, Subgroup 5: Aged Care Work elective units
--------------------------------------------------
This group contains five (5) Aged Care Work elective units of competency,
two (2) of which may be chosen to contribute towards course completion.
 
Group 3, Subgroup 6: Mental Health Work elective units
------------------------------------------------------
This group contains two (2) Mental Health Work elective units of
competency, both of which may be chosen to contribute towards course
completion.  

Group 3, Subgroup 7: General elective units
-------------------------------------------
This group contains ten (10) general elective units of competency, two (2)
which may be chosen to contribute towards course completion.
 
Included in the subgroup are the first aid elective units HLTFA301B,
HLTFA402B and HLTFA403A. HLTFA301B is required prerequisite study for
HLTFA402B. HLTFA403A has no prerequisite.
 
Included also in this subgroup are two (2) recognition modules to enable
learners to gain recognition of previous relevant unit of competence study
completion.
 
Group 4 - Domestic and Family Violence elective units

This group contains the domestic violence electives. Learners must complete
either this group or Group 3. If this group is selected, learners need to
complete two (2) electives, one from each of the following subgroups.
 
Group 4, Subgroup 1 - Domestic and Family Violence elective unit CHCDFV2B
-------------------------------------------------------------------------
This group contains the prerequisite unit, CHCDFV2B, Manage own
professional development in responding to domestic and family violence,
which must be completed prior to or in conjunction with the domestic and
family violence units in Group 4, Subgroup 2.
 
This unit is not included in the list of electives of the Certificate III,
is in the CHC50702, Diploma of Community Welfare Work. The unit fulfils the
requirements of CHC30802, Certificate III in Community Services Work to
count as an elective because it is a Community Service Training Package
unit at a higher level.
 
Group 4, Subgroup 2 - Domestic and Family Violence elective units

This group contains three (3) domestic and family violence elective units,
of which may be chosen to contribute towards course completion.
 
Group 999
---------
 
This is an enrichment group. The group contains modules to support student
skills development if required. The group does not count towards course
completion.
 
Learner Support
---------------
Learners who may require additional support will be able to co-enrol in the
Learner Support course 9999. This course provides support for language,
literacy and numeracy needs. There is no additional enrolment fee for this
course.
 
Minimum Workplace Component

A minimum of 60 hours of workplace learning and assessment must be
undertaken to satisfy industry requirements.
