    Introduction

The Graduate Certificate in Health Impact Assessment (HIA) is a multidisciplinary course designed to provide specialised, advanced training for graduates with a responsibility for, or an interest in, the development and implementation of health impact assessment. HIA is a key component of informed decision-making processes by governments around the world. The Australian Federal Government introduced Health Impact Assessment Guidelines in September, 2001. There is currently no course with a specific focus on HIA in Western Australia. Present and future markets will come from undergraduate students and professionals in the health, environment, planning and economic sectors.

    Course Entry Requirements/Requisites

"Applicants usually require the equivalent of a bachelor degree or advanced diploma but , in certain cases , relevant work experience may be recognised ".

    Recognition of Prior Learning

Recognition of prior learning will be assessed on an individual basis by the course co-ordinator. There are not formalised VET articulation agreements.

    Duration and Availability

This course is six months full-time or equivalent part-time study. It is available fully on-line or externally. When the course is offered to international students it will be conducted for cohorts around 20 students and will be presented in a lecture/workshop/classroom format. Curtin units are available in semesters one and two and Murdoch units are available in semester one only.

    Course Organisation

Four core units are required for completion of this course. Optional units are available if students are given RPL for any of the core units.

    Career Opportunities

Health impact assessment is an emerging area with no other formal qualifications available. Potential career opportunities include positions in the health, environment, planning and economic sectors. The growing use of health impact assessment in development projects will impact on demand for professionals with health impact assessment skills in both government and private sectors. There is a growing interest in the area of Health Impact Assessment (HIA) in the Asia Pacific region and there is potential to attract students because we have the World Health Organisation Collaborating Centre for Environmental Health Impact Assessment at Curtin University. The Department of Health has recently established a health impact assessment section that is developing strategies to implement HIA procedures in Western Australia.

    Additional Course Expenses
Students may be expected to purchase a number of textbooks, readers and other essential study materials.

    Further Information

Upon completion of this degree students may be eligible to gain entry and receive RPL for all 4 units in the non-accredited stream of the Master of Environmental Health.
