Non Award Certificate in Guiding Meditation

  • Objectives The Certificate in Guiding Meditation is a non-award course that will provide a focus for training meditators in leadership roles in schools, hospitals, youth groups and parishes. The course will accommodate the needs of students from a range of Western and Eastern Christian traditions, whilst also referring to other faith traditions. The course is offered in conjunction with the School of Prayer in the Office of Evangelisation, Catholic Archdiocese of Melbourne. The aims are to improve the practice and understanding of Christian and other forms of meditation in Australia.
  • Entry requirements 1. Evidence of two year' sustained practice in meditation; 2. Two referees' reports, one from a personal and one from a professional referee familiar with the applicant's meditative experience ; and 3. A satisfactory interview re suitability for the course.

    MEDT100 Meditation in the Christian Tradition

    This unit will focus on the history and practice of meditation in the Christian tradition. The rediscovered ancient techniques of prayer, using mantras, sacred words, icons and symbols will introduce participants to the rich heritage of Christian meditation. Emphasis will be placed on the use of Lectio Divina as a way of breaking open the Holy Scriptures.

    MEDT101 Meditation Across the Lifespan

    Teaching Organisation 36 contact hours or equivalent (3 modules of 12 contact hours or equivalent).

    Meditation with children, teenagers and adults offers unique opportunities to explore the depths of Christian spiritual life. This unit will examine stages of development and meditation techniques appropriate for various age groups with an emphasis on Christian approaches. A compulsory part of the unit is supervised professional experience or experiential learning.

    MEDT102 Meditation and Special Needs

    Prerequisites MEDT100 Meditation in the Christian Tradition
    Teaching Organisation 36 contact hours or equivalent (3 modules of 12 contact hours or equivalent).

    This unit will prepare students for leading meditation sessions in schools and parishes. The special needs of individuals and groups at various stages of life’s journey will be considered. Particular attention will be given to the link between psychology, temperament and spirituality. The power of meditation in spiritual, psychological and physical healing will also be an area of special focus and attention. An introduction to leadership and interpersonal communication skills will also be highlighted.

    MEDT103 Meditation in Other Traditions

    Prerequisites MEDT100 Meditation in the Christian Tradition
    Teaching Organisation 36 contact hours or equivalent (3 modules of 12 contact hours or equivalent).

    Living in a multicultural society, many students will have already been exposed to other meditation traditions (for example, yoga, Buddhism, Sufism, Kabbalah, Dadirri, martial arts etc.) This unit will examine the history of a number of meditation techniques in the light of Christian practice and belief. An in-depth study of a spiritual classic will provide a reference point when exploring other major traditions. A compulsory part of the unit is supervised professional experience or supervised experiential learning.
