    The Bachelor of Social Science course provides students with the theoretical insights and practical competencies that will enable them to play a creative role in a variety of public and community-based settings. The resources of contemporary psychology and sociology provide crucial theory and practices that enhance the quality of human life and enrich our understanding of the human person. The course offers the opportunity for dialogue between those fields leading to professional competence in the human services sector.

    The course aims to:

    1. prepare graduates who are committed to the highest ethical standards in their dealings with clients, colleagues and the public;

    2. induct students into their academic disciplines relevant to the study of Sociology and/or Psychology or Behavioural Science;

    3. foster in students a sense of the importance of community service and a willingness to participate in public debates relevant to social, psychological or theological concerns within the Australian society;

    4. demonstrate an ability to work in interdisciplinary teams

    Professional Recognition

    Qld only: Graduates from the Behavioural Science/Counselling combination majors will be eligible to apply for associate membership of the Queensland Counsellors Association and membership of the Australian Association of Pastoral Counsellors.

    EFTSL value of units: All 10 cp units in this course have an EFTSL value of 0.125. Units with a cp value of a multiple of 10 have corresponding EFTSL values.

    1. Definitions

    “Major”: 80 cp in prescribed units in one discipline or approved interdisciplinary area, including at least 10 cp at introductory level and at least 60 cp at advanced level.

    “Minor”: 40 cp in prescribed units in one discipline or approved interdisciplinary area, including at least 10 cp at introductory level and at least 20 cp at advanced level.

    2. Requirements for Completion of the Pass Degree

    To qualify for the Pass degree, a student must complete 240 cp from the Schedule of Unit Offerings, consisting of:

       1. 80 cp from one Table A Major in Sociology, Behavioural Science or Psychology;
       2. 80 cp from:
             1. a further Major selected from Table A or Table B, provided that a student cannot undertake Majors in both Behavioural Science and Psychology; or
             2. two Minors from Table C;
       3. 20 cp from two Mission-focussed Units29;
       4. 10 cp from SOCG104 Introduction to Social Issues and Policy;
       5. in the case of a student who undertakes a major in Sociology or Behavioural Science: 10 cp from Social Science Practicum Units;
       6. up to 50 cp from Electives

    3. Requirements for Completion of the Honours Degree

    To qualify for the Honours degree a student must, in addition to satisfying the requirements of the Pass degree, complete 80 cp from the Schedule of Honours Units, consisting of:

       1. 50 cp from the Thesis; and
       2. 30 cp from Coursework Units.
