This certificate is designed to assist Indigenous students develop skills and pathways for education, training and employment. Content and delivery is based on recommendations from consultations with Community Advocates, Learning Partners and key community members together with TAFE. The courses offer the opportunity for: participation, personal development, educational pathways, completion of learning modules, improved literacy and numeracy, and employment.
The courses reflect that “a classroom is not four walls”. Excursions and community participation are an important part of each course and complement classroom delivery. They vary from semester to semester depending on the interests and needs of each group. Involvement of Community Advocates and Learning Partners gives ownership to the learning. They become guest
speakers, mentors, links into the community and workplaces for the students, as well as guides to the development and delivery of the program. Participants in Certificate I should have literacy and numeracy skills at approximately Level 1 of the National Reporting System (NRS).
Students need to exhibit a commitment to self improvement plus a willingness to accept constructive feedback and to working in a respectful, participatory environment.
When Does The Course Start?
February and July. Flexible entry is negotiable.
PT: 1-2 years (18 Hours Weekly) depending on unit selection or availability
Course hours are nominal only and may vary from semester to semester.

Applicants must be of Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander descent. There are no limitations to entry based on age, gender, physical ability, social or educational background. Participants may enrol in a qualification at any level. Entry points are determined by an assessment of a student’s skills and the determination of their learning and pathway needs. Students need to exhibit a commitment to self improvement plus a willingness to accept constructive feedback and to working in a respectful, participatory environment.

Study Area Summary
Certificate I is directed at Reengagement, Building Literacy and Numeracy Skills, Confidence Building and as an entry point.
Assessment is against the unit requirements of the Certificate and may combine the requirements of more than one unit. Assessment takes into account cultural factors and literacy levels. It may include written work, oral presentations, community and workplace activities, role play, discussion and teacher observation. Tasks for assessment may be completed as individual or group activities, or pair work. Community Advocates and Learning Partners may contribute to the assessment requirements and process. Opportunities for reassessment are offered.
