    Participants will gain the skills and knowledge to work as a retail assistant in a pharmacy. This qualification has a vast range of subject matter in the areas of health, nutrition, medical and beauty needs. This course also includes 60 hours of practical placement.

    Course Information
    Students have an opportunity to gain the skills and knowledge required to work in the pharmacy industry. This certificate has a vast range of subject matter including serving and interacting with customers, merchandising products and controlling stock, understanding the product range and the roles and responsibilities of pharmacy assistants, communicating with customers to identify needs and provide appropriate product advice and/or referral.

    Students will complete a period of work placement in the pharmacy industry, equipping them
    with a balance of knowledge and skills at the completion of the course.

    Full-time: 17 weeks, day only (including 60 hours practical placement)

    Entrance Requirements
    No formal requirements but basic English and Numeracy skills are required. Must be of minimum employment age.

    Accept prescriptions and deliver medicine
    This unit covers the skills and knowledge required to accept prescriptions from the customer,
    confirm prescription information, communicate information to a pharmacist and deliver
    dispensed medicines to customers in a community pharmacy

    Support the sale of pharmacy and pharmacist-only medicines
    This unit covers the skills and knowledge required to support the sale of pharmacy and
    pharmacist-only medicines (S2 and S3)

    Identify, locate and sell products related to allergies
    This unit covers the skills and knowledge required to provide information to customers on
    products, services and customer self-care practices to treat allergies

    Identify, locate and sell analgesic and anti inflammatory products
    This unit covers the skills and knowledge required to provide information to customers on
    products, services and customer self- care practices related to analgesic and anti
    inflammatory products

    Identify, locate and sell cough and cold products
    This unit covers the skills and knowledge required to provide information to customers on
    products, services and customer self-care practices related to cough and cold products

    Identify, locate and sell eye, ear and oral care products
    This unit covers the skills and knowledge required to provide information to customers on
    products, services and customer self-care practices related to eye, ear and oral care
    products

    Identify, locate and sell products for gastro intestinal conditions
    This unit covers the skills and knowledge required to provide information to customers on
    products, services and customer self-care practices to treat gastro-intestinal conditions

    Identify, locate and sell for first aid and wound care products
    This unit covers the skills and knowledge required to provide information to customers on
    products, services and customer self-care practices related to first aid and wound care
    products

    Identify, locate and sell products for skin and fungal conditions
    This unit covers the skills and knowledge required to provide information to customers on
    products, services and customer self-care practices related to treat skin and fungal
    conditions

    Apply point of sale handling procedures
    This unit covers the skills and knowledge required to operate point of sale equipment, apply
    store policy and procedures to a range of transactions, interact with customers and package
    or wrap an item for transportation

    Interact with customers
    This unit covers the skills and knowledge required to deliver service to customers. It entails
    being able to communicate effectively with customers, respond to their complaints, receive
    and process sales orders and identify special customer requirements

    Organise and maintain work areas
    This unit covers the skills and knowledge required to maintain and organise work areas in a
    retail environment. It involves applying personal hygiene practices and the organised use of
    equipment and chemicals to keep the workplace tidy, clean and safe

    Communicate in the workplace
    This unit covers the skills and knowledge required for effective communication with
    customers and other staff in the workplace. It involves establishing contact with customers,
    processing information, working in a team, maintaining personal presentation, following
    routine instructions, and reading and interpreting retail documents

    Work effectively in a retail environment
    This unit covers the skills and knowledge required to work effectively in a retail environment.
    It involves acting responsibly and in a non discriminatory manner, developing retail industry
    knowledge, including industrial award or agreement relevant to the job role, maintaining
    personal hygiene and presentation, and prioritising tasks

    Perform stock control procedures
    This unit covers the skills and knowledge required to handle stock in a retail environment. It
    involves receiving and processing incoming goods, rotating stock and dispatching goods

    Merchandise products
    This unit covers the skills and knowledge required to merchandise products within a retail
    store. It involves the arrangement and presentation of merchandise, setting up and
    maintaining displays and labelling and pricing stock

    Apply safe working practices
    This unit encompasses the National Occupational Health and Safety Commission (NOHSC)
    guidelines for occupational health and safety. It covers the skills and knowledge required to
    maintain a safe work environment for staff, customers and others. It involves observing basic
    safety and emergency procedures

    Minimise theft
    This unit covers the skills and knowledge required to minimise theft in a retail environment. It
    involves applying routine store security, taking appropriate action to minimise theft and
    maintaining security of cash, registers or terminals and keys

    Sell products and services
    This unit covers the skills and knowledge required to sell products and services in a retail
    environment. It involves the use of sales techniques and encompasses the key selling skills
    from approaching the customer to closing the sale. It requires a basic level of product
    knowledge

    Specialty elective units also need to be completed

    Recognition of Prior learning (RPL)
    Recognition of prior learning that acknowledges the skills and knowledge that students have
    obtained through work or life experiences is available.

    Credit Transfer
    Students may be eligible for exemptions where previous training has earned a formal
    qualification to equal the required unit.
