    This course is designed to provide applicants with the skills and knowledge to develop higher level skills and knowledge to work as a pharmacy assistant. Although you will be working under the supervision of the pharmacist you may provide support and advice to other staff or undertake a defined co-ordination role in the pharmacy.

    Course Information
    This course is designed to provide applicants with the skills and knowledge to become
    competent to work in a community pharmacy. Although you will be working under the
    supervision of the pharmacist you may provide support and advice to other staff or undertake
    a defined coordination role in the pharmacy.

    Dandenong

    Duration
    One Semester (17 weeks)
    Classes will be conducted two days a week, plus 60 hours of work placement on an additional day.

    Prerequisite
    Certificate II in Community Pharmacy or a minimum of three years industry experience,
    accompanied by a Skills Recognition submission. (Please make an appointment to arrange your Skills Recognition as soon as possible).

    Entrance Requirements
    No formal requirements but basic English and Numeracy skills are required. Must be of
    minimum employment age.

    Application Procedure
    Direct to Chisholm Institute. One month prior to the course commencing you will be invited to
    an information and enrolment session.

    Study Areas

    Respond effectively to difficult or challenging behaviour
    This unit of competency describes the skills and knowledge required to respond effectively to
    difficult or challenging behaviour of clients and others. These skills are associated with
    handling difficult incidents rather than managing ongoing behaviour difficulties

    Assist in dispensary operations
    This unit covers skills and knowledge required to work in a dispensary to assist a pharmacist
    to prepare prescriptions and maintain records.

    Assist in preparing dose administration containers
    This unit covers skills and knowledge required to package or pre-pack pharmaceutical
    products in dose administration containers under pharmacist direction

    Assist in preparing extemporaneous prescriptions
    This unit covers skills and knowledge required to assist a pharmacist to measure ingredients
    and prepare basic mixes to fill extemporaneous prescriptions

    Provide information, products and services on asthma
    This unit covers skills and knowledge required to develop a basic understanding of the
    asthma condition and provide information to customers on products, services and customer
    self-care practices to support customers to manage asthma

    Provide information, products and services on blood pressure
    This unit covers skills and knowledge required to develop a basic understanding of blood
    pressure and provide information to customers on products, services and customer self-care
    practices to support customers to manage blood pressure.

    Provide information, products and services on complimentary medicine
    This unit covers skills and knowledge required to develop a basic understanding of
    complimentary medicine and provide information to customers on products, services and
    customer self-care practices to support customers to purchase appropriate complementary
    medicine and related products

    Provide information, products and services on diabetes
    This unit covers skills and knowledge required to develop a basic understanding of diabetes
    conditions and provide information to customer on products, services and customer self-care
    practices to support customers to manage diabetes

    Provide information, products and services on diet, nutrition and weight management
    This unit covers skills and knowledge required to provide information to customers on
    products, services and customer self-care practices related to diet, nutrition and weight
    management

    Provide information, products and services to support home health care
    This unit covers skills and knowledge required to provide information to customers on home
    health care aids and equipment to support customers in managing health conditions at home

    Provide information, products and services on smoking cessation
    This unit covers skills and knowledge required to develop a basic understanding of smoking
    cessation and provide information to customers on products to support customers to manage
    smoking cessation

    Provide information, products and services on wound care
    This unit covers skills and knowledge required to develop a basic understanding of wound
    care and provide information to customers on products to support customers to manage
    wound care

    Provide training through instruction and demonstration of work skills
    Market and promote pharmacy products and services
    This unit covers skills and knowledge to plan and implement promotional strategies within
    community pharmacies. It covers establishing customer profiles, and developing, implementing and evaluating promotional strategies.

    work or life experiences is available.

    Position Functions
    Students who achieve this level of competency will have the skills to provide the following functions in a pharmacy: dispensary assistant, pharmacy administration tasks, front of pharmacy co-ordination, merchandising and selling co-ordination which requires interaction with customers and building relationship with customers.
