    This course assists people from culturally diverse backgrounds to improve their knowledge of Australian society, English language, and employment and living skills. Participants consolidate basic language skills. Classes for VCAL Intermediate / ESL Youth aged 18-24, are offered at Dandenong campus - learning occurs in the context of migrant or refugee youth issues and interests. Also modules from the certificate are available in part time evening classes at Dandenong campus.

    Excursions are an important part of each full time and extended part time course. They complement the classroom delivery. Excursions vary from semester to semester depending on the interest and needs of the group.
    The VCAL Intermediate & ESL Youth Programs have specifically been developed for young migrant or refugee background students. Language learning therefore is in the context of youth issues plus provides focus towards further study (return to school or TAFE/University pathways) and work. Recreational and social activities are also integral to the program and extend the formal context of structured classroom learning. ESL Youth students are supported by specialist youth workers both generally and on an individual basis.

    Applicants are placed into levels based on assessment of language level against the entry requirements of each certificate plus interview regarding past learning, life, work or study experience, and goals for the future. Levels are guided by the Indicators of Competence from the National Reporting System (NRS) and the International Second Language Proficiency Rating scale (ISLPR).

    VCAL Intermediate stream students also have the opportunity to qualify for the Certificate II in Business with 2 full days of study in mainstream subjects.

    When Does The Course Start?
    February and July (February only for VCAL Intermediate)

    Study Modes
    FT: 20 hours per week x 18 weeks plus flexible / home study requirements
    FT: 20 hours per week x 36 weeks plus flexible / home study requirements (VCAL Intermediate)
    PT: 3- 15 hours per week x 18/36 weeks. Some flexible home study hours may be required
    Course hours are nominal only and may vary from semester to semester.

    Permanent resident or TPV holder, non-English speaking background.

    Study Area Summary
    Listening; Speaking; Reading; Writing; plus elective modules such as Computer Skills, Practical Placement, Australian Studies, Current Affairs and Local Orientation. VCAL modules include Personal Development Skills, Work Related Skills, Numeracy and Mathematics, plus the opportunity to complete Certificate II in Office Administration.

    Assessment Methods
    Assessment is ongoing throughout each course and is designed to test against the learning outcomes of each module. Assessment may test more than one learning outcome at a time and may also combine requirements for more than one module. Assessment methods vary and may include written work, oral presentations, role play and discussion and teacher observation. Tasks may be completed as individual or group activities, or pair work.
