Objectives:
The Certificate III in Hairdressing (non-apprenticeship) and the Certificate IV in Hairdressing will equip you with skills and knowledge to work in the hairdressing industry in several roles. The Certificate III in Hairdressing is offered as a fee-for-service course for students who do not want to undertake a three-year apprenticeship. Fee payment plans can be arranged. The Certificate III in Hairdressing consists of theory work and practical experience in industry and in the Gordon Institute salon Creative Futures Hair and Beauty using internationally renowned Pivot Point resources. Certificate III in Hairdressing covers haircutting, hair design, colouring, decolourising and lightening and chemical reformation for male and female clients. The course also introduces occupational health and safety, hair analysis, hair structure and growth and hair and scalp disorders. Certificate III in Hairdressing graduates will be qualified professional hairdressers.
Entry Requirements:
You must complete a Direct Entry Application Form. Applicants will be expected to have relevant language, literacy, numeracy and communication skills to study the Certificate III in Hairdressing. You will also be required to attend an interview. All applicants will also need the ability to maintain fee commitments, as detailed below.

Design and Perform Full and Partial Highlighting Techniques
Perform Colour Correction
Perform Chemical Curling and Volumising Services
Perform Chemical Straightening and Relaxing Services
Prepare Clients for Salon Services

Maintain and Organise Work Areas
Follow Personal Health and Safety Routines at Work
Design haircut structures
Apply one length/solid haircut structures
Apply graduated haircut structures
Apply layered haircut structures
Apply over-comb techniques
Design and apply short to medium-length hair design finishes
Apply the principles of hairdressing science
Consult with clients and treat hair and scalp conditions

Duration
The Certificate III in Hairdressing (non-apprenticeship) is a 12–15 month full-time course*. Students who have already completed Certificate II in Hairdressing will be able to complete the course in 12 months. Student intakes are by semester to meet demand.

Students can expect approximately four days class attendance each week and industry placement throughout the course. Industry placement is undertaken at the Creative Futures Salon as well as in industry.

Selection Criteria
Certificate III in Hairdressing applicants will be assessed at an interview. Assessment will also be based on previous educational records, work and other relevant experience as identified on your application form. If there are more applicants than course vacancies then preference will be given to applicants who have demonstrated knowledge of and interest in the hairdressing industry.

Links and options exist between various levels of study. Accredited pathways exist enabling students to move between courses within the Gordon and to other higher education institutions.

Recognition of Prior Learning

Recognition of prior learning (RPL) may be given for skills and knowledge gained through previous study or other relevant experience. For further information refer to the RPL brochure that can be found under Downloads & Forms.
