WHAT IS AN APPRENTICESHIP?
Apprenticeships are normally a four year package that consists of employment and training. An apprentice attends Trade School for up to three years on a part time basis but also receives training on-the-job. There are special government subsidies and rates of pay and conditions for
Apprentices must be fifteen years of age or over and must have a registered/licensed employee who has agreed to employ them as an apprentice. Apprenticeships are for new employees or employees that have been employed for less than three months on a full time basis or 12 months on a part time basis.
WHAT IS A PLUMBER?
A plumber is a licensed Tradesperson who fabricates,
installs, tests and maintains:
• Pipes & Gas lines;
• Fixtures & Fittings;
They may be required to install equipment such as boilers, pumps, heating and cooling systems, natural gas ovens, water tanks and solar heating systems.
WHAT ARE THE COURSE ENTRY REQUIREMENTS?
There are no formal requirements for entry into this course other than to have entered into a ‘Contract of Training’ with your employer and be employed as an apprentice. Please note classes commence from the first week of February and enrolments should by finalised well before then. A mid year class may start in July depending upon demand, but enrolments still maybe taken at any other time of the year.
HOW IS THE COURSE STRUCTURED?
To be awarded the Certificate III in Plumbing qualification, candidates must achieve a minimum of
four of the following plumbing Streams:
Stream 1 – Water (Mandatory)
Stream 2 – Sanitary
Stream 3 – Drainage
Stream 4 – Mechanical Services
Stream 5 – Roofing
Stream 6 – Gas Services
The rules for each of these individual Streams are detailed in the Training Package document, and are summarised below:
Stream 1 – Water (Mandatory): 24 Core and 6
Stream 2 – Sanitary: 6 Core and 4 Electives.
Stream 3 – Drainage: 9 Core and 3 Electives
Stream 4 – Mechanical Services: 4 Core and 11
Stream 5 – Roofing: 9 Core and 4 Electives.
Stream 6 – Gas Services: 12 Core and 5
