Course Outline
The Diploma of Information Technology (Networking) combined with the Diploma of Information Technology (Systems Administration) is a two year program which is comprised of a set of industry developed and nationally endorsed competencies. This course has been designed to produce graduates with the ability to adapt to the rapidly changing needs of the Information Technology industry. It will provide a breadth of knowledge and skills as well as the opportunity for students to specialise and attain a high level of expertise in designing, implementing and managing complex networks including global networks. In the first year of the program, students should complete the Certificate IV in Information Technology (Networking). Students will also be given the opportunity of completing a range of vendor programs such as CISCO and Red Hat Linux which have been embedded into the program.

Training Opportunities
If the networking of computers or system administration is what you are interested in, this course will provide you with the practical skills and knowledge required to work in this rapidly growing field of IT. Training focuses on networking and includes hardware, operating systems, system support, and network scripting. Students also learn about the application of IT to the business environment, through involvement a virtual business where they take on the roles of employees of the business including management. Students will also be able to complete the international recognised vendor CISCO training in readiness of certification.
Course Structure
The Dual Award Diploma of Information Technology (Networking) and (Systems Administration) is a national qualification consisting of twenty five competencies. These competencies are clustered to form six subjects. Most subjects are delivered over a full year. To qualify for the award, students must successfully complete all of the units of competence.
List of Subjects with Competencies
Project Planning (Semester one only)
Students learn to manage IT projects using project management tools. The subject also incorporates constraints, risk and quality management.
Advanced Networking (Full year)
Upon successful completion of this subject students will have developed knowledge and skills in local area network design and configuration, installation of switches and routers, connection to a wide area network and the design and implementation of an internet infrastructure.
Security Fundamentals (Full year)
Students will be able to identify ICT system threats, with a focus on identifying these in accordance with business requirements; identify appropriate controls in accordance with organisational strategic requirements, including the preparation of disaster recovery and contingency plans, the development, planning and implementation of a network security shield, the provision of privacy for users, and the management of network security.
Advanced Operating Systems (Full year)
Students will continue to enhance their knowledge of a Linux system, focusing on Linux skills, such as file system and process management.
System Solutions (Semester two only)
Students will identify the importance of reviewing and managing a high standard of delivery of maintenance services through the establishment and maintenance of good client user liaisons and quality management systems.
System Security Testing (Semester two only)
Students will learn how to integrate databases with developed websites, internet counter measures, and firewall technologies.
