  • Objectives
    This technician level course encompasses a wide range of skills, techniques and processes with specialist studies in biological and environmental testing, process manufacturing testing or forensic chemistry. Food technology units may also be available. This course provides training for personnel who provide para-professional support in a wide range of scientific laboratories, and graduates are flexible, adaptable and competent to meet the technological and administrative demands of the industry which they work in. Satisfactory completion of the first year qualifies for the Certificate IV in Laboratory Techniques.

    Course Outline
    This course provides training for personnel who provide para-professional support in a wide range of scientific laboratories. The course encompasses a wide range of skills, techniques and processes so that graduates are flexible, adaptable and competent to meet the technological and administrative demands of the industry they may work in. In some cases students may use this Diploma to gain entry to a degree course in science. Satisfactory completion of the first year qualifies for the Certificate IV in Laboratory Techniques.

    Part-time: 4 – 8 years

    Entrance Requirements
    Satisfactory completion of VCE Units 3 & 4 in English, Sciences and Mathematics. Students who
    have not completed Units 3 & 4 in Chemistry, Biology, Physics or Mathematics may be required to
    undertake bridging modules as part of their course.

    Part time – Direct to Institute

    Study Areas
    As per Certificate IV in Laboratory Techniques, plus:
    Maintain instruments and equipment
    Provide information to customers
    Perform microbiological tests
    Apply routine spectrometric, chromatographic and electrophoretic techniques
    Obtain representative samples in accordance with sampling plan
