  • Objectives
    Deakin University's postgraduate Engineering program has been designed to strengthen, build on and extend students' understanding of engineering principles required for successful engineering careers in Australia and overseas. Students will gain technical skills, a positive approach to problem solving and the ability to work as a team to enable them to start work on complex projects immediately. Students can chose from six specialisms in Mechanical Engineering, Electronics Engineering or Civil Engineering. The six specialisms all provide students with expertise in areas of high demand for graduates. The program's focus on practical experience and a supervised research project or industry project provides students with advanced project management skills. This experience equips graduates with the ability to apply their skills and knowledge to practical, industrially focussed problems. The Master of Engineering can be undertaken as a stand-alone or exit qualification from the Master of Engineering (Professional) program.

    The Master of Engineering can be undertaken as a stand alone course or exit qualification from the Master of Engineering (Professional) program. Entry to the Master of Engineering requires a four-year Bachelor of Engineering degree or equivalent. Applicants without a Bachelor of Engineering degree entry qualification, who have been admitted to membership of Engineers Australia or other equivalent professional body, may be admitted to the program subject to Faculty Board approval.

    Fees and charges

    Equivalent Full Time Student Load (EFTSL)
    EFTSL is the standard annual full time load. Eight credit points is the standard full time load for one year of study.
    This is a fee-paying course.  Domestic students may be eligible for FEE-HELP assistance in paying these tuition fees.  For more information about FEE-HELP go to http://www.deakin.edu.au/future-students/fees/

    Fee paying place - Domestic (DFP)
    A Fee paying place is one for which the university does not receive any government funding. As such, students enrolled in these places are required to contribute the full cost of their course.
    Fee paying places are available to domestic students. Domestic students are those who are Australian citizens, New Zealand citizens or holders of a permanent visa.

    * The 'indicative annual course fee' cited has been provided as a guide only. It has been calculated on the basis of a typical enrolment of a student undertaking the course in 2009, and reflects the cost involved in undertaking a full-time quota of units within the specified discipline.
    The actual fees charged by Deakin University will depend upon the discipline from which each individual unit is chosen, and may vary from the indicative course fee cited, particularly if units are chosen from a number of disciplines. The cost of each unit offered in 2009 can be viewed at  http://www.deakin.edu.au/current-students/handbooks2009/search.php.
    Please note that the fees per unit/credit point may increase annually due to rises in the cost of course delivery and service.

    Course rules

    To be awarded the degree of Master of Engineering, a student must successfully complete units with a total value of 12 credit points, including the following:

     
    Two common core units from:

    SEB711 Developing and Managing Innovation  

    SEN705 Engineering Professional Practice  

    SIT764 Project Management  

    and
    A six credit point specialism in one of:

    Mechanical Engineering (Product Design and Development)

    Mechanical Engineering (Automotive Engineering)

    Electronics Engineering (Automation and Control Systems)

    Electronics Engineering (Automotive Intelligent Systems)

    Civil Engineering (Construction Management)

    Civil Engineering (Water Engineering)

     

    and

    Four elective units at level 7 (across the Faculty/University)

    or

    SEN701 Professional Practice 1  

    SEN702 Professional Practice 2  

    plus two approved elective units at level 7 (across the Faculty/University).



    Equipment requirements
    Students must have access to the Internet, a microcomputer, modem and printer to provide, via the telephone network, communication with Deakin University's on-campus computers.     Admission requirements - general
    Deakin University offers admission to postgraduate courses through a number of Admission categories.
    In all categories of admission, selection is based primarily on academic merit as indicated by an applicant's previous academic record.

    The Master of Engineering can be undertaken as a stand alone course or exit qualification from the Master of Engineering (Professional) program. Entry to the Master of Engineering requires a four-year Bachelor of Engineering degree or equivalent. Applicants without a Bachelor of Engineering degree entry qualification, who have been admitted to membership of Engineers Australia or other equivalent professional body, may be admitted to the program subject to Faculty Board approval.


    Advanced standing - general
    The University aims to provide students with as much credit as possible for approved prior study or informal learning which exceeds the normal entrance requirements for the course and is within the constraints of the course regulations. Students are required to complete a minimum of one-third of the course at Deakin University, or four credit points, whichever is the greater. In the case of certificates, including graduate certificates, a minimum of two credit points within the course must be completed at Deakin.

    Advanced standing - specific
    Advanced standing may be granted for relevant postgraduate studies, in accordance with standard University rules.


    How to apply

    Applications must be made directly to the university through the Applicant Portal referring to closing dates for applications as dates for particular courses may vary.

    Exit points
    Candidates may exit:

        * with a Graduate Certificate of Engineering after completion of four level 7 credit points
        * with a Graduate Diploma of Engineering after completion of 8 credit points, including two common core units and one specialism.
