Comments about Master of Tertiary Education Management - On Campus - Parkville - Victoria

  • Objectives
The masters program is intended to provide students with an integrated perspective and comprehensive understanding of tertiary education management and leadership in the 21st century. In the context of tertiary education, this in turn requires understanding of both the nature of the academic enterprise and of the (inter)national socio-political and socio-economic environments in which they are located. Following from this, the program aims to: * Introduce key concepts of public and private sector management and leadership relevant to the tertiary education sector; * Stimulate reflection and critical analysis in relation to professional practice, embodying the concept of the reflective professional; * Develop an understanding of a range of perspectives on theory, policy and practice relating to tertiary education management and leadership; * Provide participants with an international comparative perspective on tertiary education policy and management; * Expose participants to evidence-based, active learning strategies requiring the application of theoretically informed knowledge to solve problems that exist on a day-to-day basis in tertiary education institutions; * Develop the skills-base necessary to operate effectively in a senior management and leadership position in tertiary education.
  • Entry requirements
Students with an undergraduate degree (or equivalent) and five years of relevant work experience.
  • Academic title
    Master of Tertiary Education Management
  • Course description
The program is structured as a nominally two-year, part-time program. Students will have the option to complete the program in three years. It consists of three compulsory foundation units and a final project plus a set of elective units and operates on a system of credit accumulation. For completion of the degree, 150 credit points are required. The compulsory foundation units and the final project are 25 credit point units and include 7 days of intensive residential schools each. The elective units are 12.5 credit points units, and will be either fully on-line units or supported by residentials.

For the foundation units two 3- and 4-day intensive residential periods per unit are organised. In the first residential, participants will be introduced to the key concepts and approaches that feature in the unit. Following a period of supported self-study – participants are assigned an individual tutor and will work in virtual syndicate groups as well as through moderated discussion boards – an on-line assessment takes place which will assist the students in evaluating their mastery of the key concepts, theories and approaches introduced in the unit.

Participants then will come together for the second residential in which application of the unit’s content knowledge takes place. Working in syndicate groups, participants will work through tailor-made simulations, with assessment of their activities and products being part of the learning process. This reduces the “out-of-school” assignment load for the participants. The specially developed simulation exercises strengthen the case-based, problem-oriented approach that underpins the program. During the residentials guest lectures will be provided by senior managers and leaders from both the public and private sectors exposing participants to different leadership and management approaches.

For the elective part of the program, the philosophy is dependent on the options chosen. The final project once again comprises two residential sessions, with the first one focussing on methodology, problem selection and project design. The second residential will provide participants with the opportunity to present and discuss the outcomes of their consultancy and research work with their peers and selected senior staff.

Students complete four compulsory subjects (100 points) and then 50 points of elective subjects chosen from a range of options to meet individual needs and interests.
