Graduate Certificate in Education

  • Objectives The course is professionally-oriented and is intended for people currently employed in education, special education or education management, those who would like to be so employed, and those who have an interest in developing their knowledge and practice in these areas. It provides students with an introduction to knowledge and skills in their area of interest, with a focus on understanding and changing practice. Learning outcomes It is expected that graduates from a Graduate Certificate in Education will be able to: * critically discuss and evaluate current theory and research in selected areas of educational policy and practice; * examine recent writing in the field of education with an informed critical perspective; * translate knowledge gained from reading, discussion and writing into educational practices; * contribute to the informed construction of educational policy, whether local, national or global.
  • Entry requirements Applicants must normally hold an approved degree or equivalent qualification. However, the Faculty Board may, under certain circumstances and subject to specific conditions, admit others who can show evidence of fitness for candidature. Credit may be granted, on application, for topics completed or being undertaken towards another relevant graduate certificate or masters degree, or for accredited professional development. In addition to this generic admission requirement, some specialities in the graduate certificate have additional admission criteria, as follows: * The Graduate Certificate in Education ((Behaviour), Graduate Certificate in Education (Learning Difficulties), Graduate Certificate in Education (Vision Impairment), Graduate Certificate (Cognitive Psychology and Educational Practice), and Graduate Certificate in Education (Leadership and Management) require that applicants have not less than two years' relevant work experience. * The Graduate Certificate in Education (Orientation and Mobility) requires that applicants have at least one year of relevant experience. * The Graduate Certificate in Education (IBMYP) requires that applicants are teaching in an International Baccalaureate school. * ### The Graduate Certificate in Education (Higher Education) is offered to Flinders University teaching staff only. Interested academic staff members, please email kay.govin@flinders.edu.au for an application form to request for admission into the course. Applications for admission to GCE (Higher Education) must be received by 21 January 2009 to commence in Semester 1, 2009 and by 31 May 2009 to commence in Semester 2, 2009. The Graduate Certificate in Education may be completed in one semester full-time, or the equivalent part-time. However as not all topics are offered in every semester some specialisations are not suited to full-time study.

    INTRODUCTION

    The Graduate Certificate in Education is an 18-unit program offered by the Faculty of Education, Humanities, Law and Theology on a Commonwealth Supported basis and is available on campus and in distance mode.

    Students may focus study into a number of specialisations as set out below.

    If a specialisation is completed, then the award is a named Graduate Certificate in Education with the title of the specialisation given in brackets, eg Graduate Certificate in Education (Learning Difficulties).

    If there is no specialisation, then a Graduate Certificate in Education is awarded.

    To qualify for the Graduate Certificate in Education, a student must complete 18 units with a grade of P or NGP or better in any topics listed below or additional topics offered at the masters level within the School of Education, or approved topics at this level from other awards in the University.

    To qualify for the Graduate Certificate in Education in a speciality area, a student must complete 18 units of study with a grade of P or NGP or better according to one of the following programs.
