Course descriptionAbout the course
Charles Sturt University is a major provider of medical imaging practitioners in Australia, preparing radiographers and nuclear medicine technologists.
Students of the Postgraduate Diploma of Medical Ultrasound have the opportunity to develop their academic skills to enable them to undertake a lifetime of professional development in the field.
On completion of the Postgraduate Diploma coursework of 64 points including a clinical logbook, graduates are eligible to become an Accredited Medical Sonographer (AMS) through the Australasian Sonographer Accreditation Registry (ASAR). You may also continue study with the Master of Medical Ultrasound and receive credit for the 64 points completed in the Postgraduate Diploma.
Applicants to the Postgraduate Diploma program should have access to a suitable medical ultrasound department with appropriate supervision for the duration of the course. In addition, all students must complete a clinical skills assessment offered by the Australian Institute of Ultrasound in order to graduate with the Postgraduate Diploma. Study can commence in either Autumn Session (February) or Spring Session (July) in each year.
Depending on qualifications, it may be necessary for international students to attend a two-week workshop in Australia.
Credit
Applicants holding a Diploma of Medical Ultrasound (DMU) or Graduate Diploma in Ultrasound from another university, or part completion of other relevant qualifications, may receive credit towards the Postgraduate Diploma, in consultation with the Course Coordinator.
Bridging and enabling programs are available through CSU to assist with the assumed knowledge required for the course.
Residential schools
There is a compulsory five-day residential school, which is held in Wagga Wagga, usually during April of each year. Attendance at the residential school occurs during enrolment in PHY541 Ultrasound Physics and Instrumentation.
Students must attend a compulsory weekend residential school at the Australian Institute of Ultrasound on the Gold Coast to complete the clinical skills assessment.
In addition, there is an optional two-day introductory residential school held in Wagga Wagga in February.
