Macquarie is a university on the move. It's our aim to push Macquarie into the top eight research universities in Australia and the top 200 in the world. And we're well on the way - boosting our research effort and ensuring our learning and teaching is of the highest class.

There's a great dynamic about today's Macquarie. We've been busy recruiting some of the world's top researchers for our core research areas, which range from Ancient History, through animal behaviour study and photonics, to lasers and proteomics. Many have joined us already; others are on the way to link up with our top-class current staff.

At Macquarie we continue to keep faith with a philosophy that has animated Macquarie from its foundation - the unity of knowledge. Eschewing the old scholarly divisions, we take a multi-disciplinary approach to teaching and researching: highly relevant today given the complexity of the world's problems.

Our research-active academics are at the cutting edge of their disciplines, ensuring that their expertise flows through to provide the best possible learning and teaching experience for our students.

Our teaching is designed not only to prepare graduates for a lifetime of learning but also to turn out the leaders the world will need for the future.

We have a strong commitment to diversity, equity and social justice with a comprehensive range of scholarship offerings designed, for example, to benefit students from disadvantaged backgrounds and Indigenous people.

Our aim is to give students from all backgrounds a chance to achieve their potential and to make their contribution to broader society.

Over the next few years staff, students and visitors can expect to see new buildings on campus, including a hospital, a new library, and a new research complex – while our new sport and aquatic centre is already providing excellent service. Most of these buildings are designed to add value to our research and teaching efforts. Old buildings will also be refurbished.

There'll be no change to Macquarie's beautiful park-like grounds: most of the new constructions will be on the periphery of the campus, tightly controlled in terms of height, elevations and sight-lines.

We are committed to doing what we can to preserve the environment. For example, not only will building be sympathetic, it will also be sustainable utilising "green" technologies, with our Sustainability Office taking an important role in all projects.

All developments must be commercially advantageous to the university, while at the same time providing a research link.

The best example of this is the six-storey, 144-bed Macquarie University Private Hospital, now under construction. The new Australian School of Advanced Medicine, which will be the first medical school to award degrees for subspecialties in surgery, will link in by providing research opportunities.

A new railway station is set to open on campus next year, with an underground station linking the University with the city centre.

This new transport link will enhance Macquarie's position at the hub of the global economic corridor - home to numerous important companies - that runs from the university through North Sydney down to Sydney airport. As well as being a deeply scholarly institution, Macquarie is well-connected with industry and commerce.

Macquarie is also deeply committed to proactive community outreach. One example is a University partnership with the NSW Department of Education and Training designed to positively influence young people's attitudes towards studying science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) subjects. Working with the Peninsula Community of Schools, Macquarie is helping to develop and implement innovative teaching and learning practices within STEM curriculum areas.

Macquarie does not stand still. And we don't wait for government handouts. Our work in shaping Macquarie into one of the world's best universities will drive along in part thanks to funds generated by our property trust - the first such trust owned by an Australian university which, working with the university's business development arm, will raise $1 billion in investment funds within the next 10 years.

Today's Macquarie is an advanced research institution, with strong links to government, industry and the community. It has top rate study, social and sporting facilities. And as good as we are, we're poised to get even better.
