  • Objectives
    The Graduate Certificate in Teaching English as a Foreign Language (TEFL) program, offers studies in the specialist area of teaching English to speakers of other languages. The Graduate Certificate will provide an initial teaching qualification or a specialist qualification for those who are already qualified teachers. This qualification is primarily intended for those who will teach in overseas settings and does not qualify graduates to teach within Australia. Students will be required to undertake teaching experience in related settings integrated in the courses that contribute to the program. This will include observations and small and larger group teaching as relevant. The objectives of the program are to provide students with: * knowledge of factors that influence second language acquisition; * knowledge of how to teach reading, writing, speaking and listening using communicative and text-based approaches; * practical experiences with small group and whole class instruction; * skills for sequencing instructional material and assessing students' language development; * methods for evaluating teaching and adapting practice; * knowledge of professional requirements for teaching effectively in the EFL context.
  • Practical experience
    Students will be required to undertake teaching experience in related settings integrated in the courses that contribute to the program.
  • Entry requirements
    All applications for entry into the Graduate Certificate in Teaching English as a Foreign Language (TEFL) will be examined by the Faculty to determine the applicant's eligibility to be offered a place in the program. To be eligible for entry into the Graduate Certificate (TEFL) an applicant must demonstrate the capacity to undertake the degree by meeting at least one of the four following entrance criteria: 1. A four (4) year undergraduate degree from a recognised tertiary institution preferably with an Education major or TESOL studies. 2. A three (3) year undergraduate degree from a recognised tertiary institution plus recognised prior learning (RPL) involving continuous professional development as evidenced by at least one of: * significant contribution to industry; * promotion in the workplace; * recognition by a professional body; * community/industry leadership; * receipt of significant prizes and/or awards; * personal references that attest to the applicant's high level performance in the workplace/industry/community; or * publications/patents/copyright. 3. Meritorious results in their previous degree (such as a GPA of 4.5 or above) supported by academic staff on a case-by-case basis. 4. Other undergraduate qualifications where the applicant can demonstrate superior RPL of continuous professional development in the areas listed in 2 above. In accordance with Australian Qualifications Framework (see www.aqf.edu.au/masters.htm) requirements at the Masters level, graduates of the GCert (TEFL) will possess a range of academic and vocational attributes such as: * advanced knowledge of a specialist body of theoretical and applied topics; * high order skills in analysis, critical evaluation and/or professional application through the planning and execution of project work; * creativity and flexibility in the application of knowledge and skills to new situations; and * the ability to solve complex problems and think rigorously and independently.
