    International Students: Students must undertake four subjects per semester (equivalent to 40 credit points) to fulfil student visa requirements.

    Domestic Students: Most Students undertake four subjects per semester (equivalent to 40 credit points). You may, however, enrol in fewer subjects (equivalent to 30 credit points) and extend your degree over a longer period.

    Bond's Teaching methodology involves a combination of lectures, tutorials, seminars, examinations, projects, presentations, assignments, computer labs and industry projects.

    Four (4) foundation subjects from the following list after approval from the Graduate Certificate Coordinator:

    ENIL71-110 English as an International Language 1A

    SYNOPSIS
    This subject is designed for non-English-speaking background students (with IELTS scores of not less than 5.5), particularly those in the Pathways program. The subject aims to provide students with effective academic reading techniques. It will incorporat ecomprehension, interpretation, analysis, summarising, and paraphrasing of a variety of sources such as newspapers, magazines, internet, journals, and academic textbooks. The subject will be conducted in a workshop and seminar format, with students workin g individually, in pairs and in groups. Assessment will take the form of classroom quizzes, tests, and assignments. The knowledge and skills gained will be valuable when reading academic texts associated with university studies.

    Nil

    LEARNING OBJECTIVES
    Students will learn, and be expected to demonstrate, the ability to research, select, understand, skim, scan, interpret, analyse, summarise and paraphrase various texts relevant to the course and their own studies. Students completing the course should b e able to apply the knowledge and skills gained from the course when reading academic texts associated with their university studies.   

    ENIL71-111 English as an International Language 1B

    SYNOPSIS
    This subject is designed for non-English-speaking background students (with IELTS scores of not less than 5.5), particularly those in the Pathways program. The subject aims to introduce students to the essential academic writing skills needed for univers ity study. It will cover all the stages of the writing process, and will incorporate elements such as language structure, paragraph and essay structure, paraphrasing, summarising, and referencing.

    PRIOR KNOWLEDGE
    Nil

    LEARNING OBJECTIVES
    Students will learn, and be expected to demonstrate an understanding of sentence construction paragraph development planning, organising and writing a discussion essay paraphrasing summarising and referencing. Students should demonstrate an ability to produce work that contains elements of unity, clarity and precision. Students will be able to apply the knowledge and skills gained from this course to the writing of other university assignments.   

    ENIL71-112 Advanced Academic Reading Skills

    SYNOPSIS
    This subject aims to provide such students with a repertoire of appropriate skills that will help them to deal with the kinds of texts they are likely to encounter while studying at University. Students will learn how to approach and understand a wide var iety of texts that are relevant to the courses they will be taking, and they will also receive extensive practice in paraphrasing and summarising the information so that it can be used in their own assignments.

    LEARNING OBJECTIVES
    The main focus of this course will be on exposing non-native speakers of English to effective reading techniques, particularly in relation to texts that are academic in nature. With this aim in mind, the course will consist of regular workshops and tutor ials during which students will work individually, in pairs, and in groups on reading extracts from various academic sources other forms of printed texts, e.g. newspapers and journals will also be utilised. Students will learn to, and be expected to demo nstrate, the ability to understand, interpret, analyse, summarise and paraphrase these texts. 

    ENIL71-113 Advanced Academic Writing Skills

    SYNOPSIS
    This subject aims to give international students assistance with the principle aspects of academic writing that are essential to success in their university studies. Students will be provided with the theoretical and practical foundation they need to writ e in genres that are expected of them in University courses.

    PRIOR KNOWLEDGE
    Nil

    LEARNING OBJECTIVES
    Effective writing in an academic context involves a great deal more than just knowing correct grammar, punctuation and spelling. Students should appreciate the cultural differences that affect the organization of their work and the concept of intellectua l property. Students need to know how to carefully construct and develop an argument in a logical way and how to communicate their ideas using simple and clear expressions. The main aim of this course, then, is to enable students to explore all stages o f the academic writing process, so that they can adapt this knowledge to other assignment needs. 

    ENIL71-114 Academic Speaking and Listening 1

    SYNOPSIS
    This subject is designed to expose university students of non-native speaking backgrounds, with an IELTS score of not less than 5, to spoken English, particularly that used at lectures, seminars and tutorials. Coursework involves exercises in oral present ations. At the end of the course, students should have fewer problems understanding academic presentations, keeping up with the speed of native speakers, following the structure of lectures, and adapting to a variety of accents. They will be better able t o participate in academic discussions, and to give oral presentations

    Nil

    LEARNING OBJECTIVES
    Participate effectively in oral discussions, give sound classroom presentations and be better-able to understand oral academic presentations.  

    ENIL71-115 English as an International Language 2

    SYNOPSIS
    This subject is designed for non-English-speaking background students who have successfully completed both the lower level English as an International Language subjects, or who have been exempted from doing them. It exposes students to advanced academic r eading and writing. The main focus will be on reading academic texts for the purpose of writing research papers. At the end of the course, it is expected that students would have acquired the necessary skills to use relevant reading material as a source f or writing their academic assignments.

    PRIOR KNOWLEDGE
    ENIL71-110 English as an International Language 1A and ENIL71-111 English as an International Language 1B are essential and must be taken prior to enrolling in this subject.

    LEARNING OBJECTIVES
    Reading academic texts for the purpose of writing academic papers. Students will develop their ability to paraphrase, summarise, and to appropriately incorporate information from secondary sources into their academic writing. 

    ENIL71-116 Academic Speaking and Listening 2

    SYNOPSIS
    Academic Speaking is a practical course that aims to provide many speaking opportunities and tasks to prepare overseas students to perform competently and with confidence in all their courses.

    PRIOR KNOWLEDGE
    ENIL71-114 Academic Speaking and Listening 1 is essential and must be taken prior to enrolling in this subject

    LEARNING OBJECTIVES
    Students completing the course successfully should be able to comprehend oral presentations delivered by English-language-speaking staff and students at Bond, take meaningful notes of oral academic discourse, and participate fruitfully in oral academic di scussions. 

    ENIL71-118 Advanced Language & Drama

    SYNOPSIS
    This course is based on the use of drama in the language-generating process. "Drama" here refers to exercises requiring the active participation of students in language use. Such activities will incorporate a communicative, hands-on use of the English lan guage, and, as such, grammar will not be focused on.

    PRIOR KNOWLEDGE
    Nil

    LEARNING OBJECTIVES
    Language and Drama serves as an introduction to practical play-production, while maintaining its central aim of encouraging students, especially those of non-English-speaking-backgrounds, to participate actively in spoken English in class. While this obje ctive is an integral part of the course, the overall focus will be on helping both native and non-native speakers of English: a) Develop an interest in drama, especially in acting, play-writing, directing, and producing and, through these activities, ac quire skills in group-dynamics: (b) Improve their public-speaking, tutorial-participation and conversation skills (c) Increase their confidence in relation to oral communication in English (d) Increase their English-language range (e) Improve their ora l skills (e.g. articulation, intonation, voice-projection)."

    * Students may be directed to undertake certain ENIL subjects, depending on their English language abilities. (One subject may be replaced by a subject within another Faculty of the University only on the approval of the appropriate Dean.)
